Breakage
Direct physical forces can cause either cumulative or catastrophic damage. Cumulative damage such as soiling and abrasion can occur from improper handling or improper support. Catastrophic damage such as breakage and total destruction can occur from improper handling and natural or man-made disasters.

Humidity
Relative humidity extremes and fluctuations can cause mold growth, corrosion, shrinkage, loosened joints, discoloration, and disintegration.

Light
Ultraviolet radiation and excessive light can fade, darken, and disintegrate objects.

Pests
Insects, rodents, and microorganisms can stain, consume, perforate, gnaw, soil, and destroy collection objects.

Pollutants
Gaseous and particulate pollutants can discolor, degrade, disintegrate, and corrode objects.

Temperature
Temperature extremes and fluctuations can cause brittleness, discoloration, and disintegration.

Water
Water damage from flooding, leaking roofs, skylights or mechanical systems can cause staining, efflorescence, swelling, distortion, corrosion, and shrinkage.
